Casting

Darren: We chose Darren because he is a keen actor and he best fits the character we have thought up, we also think he will work wel with Emily to make the opeining sequence work and make his characters personality obvious.

Emily: We chose Emily as the actor because she best suited the female role. She has done acting in class before and is used to taking on a role. She has a similar personality to the character we thought up and we think she will work well with Darren in showingb the relationship between the characters.

Titles

We want to use font that looks like handwriting to reflect the characters personalities. We will be using two different fonts, one will reflect the mans, scruffy handwriting quite rushed whereas the woman's handwriting is more neat and doesn't look as rushed which shows her care-free personality. We chose to use two different fonts as when we are showing the man the font will be in the font designated to him and when we show the woman the titles will be in the font designated to her.

Props, Costume and Location

Props:
Two separate alarm clocks. The mans one will be an alarm on the phone which will show his high-tech possessions and show he has a lot of money. The womans alarm clock will be a simpler one to represent her care free personality. The alarms going off will indicate the start of the film and the start of the day for the two characters.
The coffee cup is important as it will be part of the comedy when it gets spilled on the woman when the two characters bump into each other.
The address book is the most important prop as it is what sets up questions in the audiences mind like, how will he find her again to give it back, when will they see each other again etc

Costume:
The man will be wearing smart clothes as it will reveal stuff about him to the audience in that he has an important job, he thinks highly of himself and is quite arrogent. The womanwill be wearing casual clothes as it reflets her care-free personality.

Location:
Whilst the titles are coming up it will be filmed in the woman and the mans seperate houses as this will reflect their personalities and reveal stuff about them to the audience. When they meet each other it will be on a road near a bus stop, this is so the comedy side of th film is set up, the woman will be running for a bus and then bumps into tghe man.

These are both different sounds of alarm clocks. These can be used in our opening sequence when the two characters are woken up in the morning by their alarm clocks. The second sound would be the mans alarm clock as it's a digital sound and this shows he has more money and has more high-tech possessions. The first sound is different from the second as it's an analogue alarm clock and therefore isnt as new and interesting this shows the girls care-free personality.

Song Title: Tea and Crumpets
Artist: Nick Leach

We choose this song as it is upbeat and fun. the genre is brit-rock as we wanted to relate the song back to the country. This song will go with opening sequence whilst the characters are getting ready as it gives it a pace and makes it look more real life. It is also similar to soundtracks in other opening sequences of our genre that we have looked at.

Film Synopsis

Darren and Emily come from different backgrounds and have completely different personalities; Darren has a top job and owns his own company and thinks very highly of himself whereas Emily is easy going and isn't tied down to any particular job. They are two people who wouldn't meet but destiny got the better of them and their lives clashed when they knocked into each other on they're way to work. After an embarrassing recovery of their knock Darren takes a shine to Emily but he is to 'upper class' for her liking and she dismisses him and they both set off on they're ways but Darren realises she forgot her address book and before he can call her back to give it to her she's gone. The film shows Darren searching through some unusual contacts of Emily's found in her address book, throughout his search he learns a lot about Emily and decides he is going to win her over. Will he find her? Will they get together?

For the opening sequence we will show Emily and Darren's journey to work with the title's, this footage of them will show their personalities and how different they both are. We will then show about 30 seconds of them bumping into each other and the comical side to it, we hope this will get the audience wanting to watch the rest and asking questions like; will they end up together? and, how will they meet again?

Initial ideas

Audience research 2 - Analysis of questionnaire

For question number '2' i found that these emotions were what people associated with romantic comedies. Happy and amused were the strongest which show that it needs to be funny. The fact people picked sad shows that it needs to relate to real life and even though its a comedy it needs to have a part that shows something bad happen and relate to real life as in good things don't always happen.

For question number '6' i found that these groups of people are mainly associated with watching romantic comedies and i'm going to use them as my main target audience as i feel they will be able to relate to the story line.

For questions number '7' i found that people thought that winter would be a better setting for a romantic comedy mainly because it has more of a 'magical' feeling to it. My opening sequence is going to bne set in winter, maybe whilst it's raining because you can create something funny with it.

Location Research for a Romantic Comedy

A lot of romantic comedies are set in winter, this gives a nice atmosphere. Snow and Christmas light can make it look pretty and happy. I think this setting would be good for a romantic comedy as it looks like it's set in a little town and doesn't look too busy. It looks calm and quite personal.

I think this setting is really nice as it has different colours from the leaves and the light is good from the sun, this creates a happy atmosphere which is what you want for a romantic comedy and also i think a park could be a good setting for any scene especially a happy one.

I think this setting is nice and creates a happy atmosphere as it looks very scenic. It looks calm and the right setting for a romantic comedy or opening sequence of a romantic comedy when the two people meet each other.

Conventions of a Romantic Comedy

  • Main character is usually a female who has just come out of a relationship or is looking for a partner.

  • They have funny scenes which embarrass the main character and make the audience feel for the character. They are also quite over the top and things that you wouldn't expect to happen.

  • Follow's how two people meet each other and how their relationship develops.

  • The relationship has to be interesting and make the audience want to carry on watching to see where the relationship ends up.

  • It makes the audience feel a varitaty of emotions e.g happyness, saddness, heartbreak, angry, funny, embarressed.

  • It has a happy ending as this is what the audience want to see and it's what they expect.

  • The funny side has to amuse and excite the audience to make them want to watch more and make the relationship between the two people more interesting.

  • Usually the two people in love are from different backgrounds or have different personalities this makes the characters more interesting.

  • The main aim is to make the audience feel let in to the characters and care about them, therefore they want to carry on watching to find out what happens to these people.

Analysis of my Genre (Romantic Comedy) - Bridget Jones Diary

  • Title of the film: 'Bridget Jones Diary' this indicates it's about the woman and what happens in her life as in the title the fact it says diary indicates she writes whats happened to her and the film will be about that.

  • How the setting/location was revealed: she is sitting in her pajamas in a room on her own, the audience learn that it's where she lives and that she lives on her own which indicates that throughout the film she will be looking for a partner.

  • Costume and props: She's in her pajamas this indicates to the audience that she has nothing better to do other than sit at home watching television. This makes the audience seel sorry with her and feel like they know more about the character.

  • Interesting camera work/ editing: They have used fade in and fade out, this creates the image that a lot of time has past and makes the audience feel that she has been there for a long time, therefore having nothing else to do which makes them want to know how her life is going to improve throughout the film.

  • Titles and font style: The font looks like handwriting, this is affective as it goes with the theme of the diary also as it's handwriting it looks more personal and goes with the film as your being let into someones life.

  • Story and how the opening sets it up: She's on her own drinking, this shows she hasn't got a very exciting life and indicates to the audience that throughout the film her life will get more interesting so it draws them in and makes them anxious to find out what till happen.

  • The genre or the film and how it's suggested: Romance comedy, this is suggested as the main character is a female which is common for romance comedies and they usually start out lonely looking for someone, this is indicated in the opening as she is living on her own. It's also funny that she's got drunk on her own and she's singing dramaticly.

Analysis of my Genre (Romantic Comedy) - Angus, Thongs and perfect snogging

  • The title and font style: In swirly white font which is girly and could also represent a teenage girls handwriting. The writing is also large and takes up half of the screen, this catches the audiences attention.

  • Title of film: The title makes the audience ask questions, they want to know who Angus is and they also want to know why the things in the title are so significant to the film, the title also indicates it's going to be about a girl.

  • How the setting/ location is revealed: The main character is running home and you get to see where she lives, there are lots of different shot types, high angle, low angle, establishing, these all help to show the audience where the film is set.

  • Costume and props: Georgia is dressed as a stuffed live to go to a fancy dress party, this costume is important as she embarrassed herself because everyone else is dressed differently which indicates that there could be more embarrassing moments for her in the rest of the film. It could also indicate the comedy side to the film.

  • Interesting camera work/ editing: Low angle shot helps to show that she's angry and annoyed this is affective as it makes the audience feel sorry for her and feel pathos for the character. It also shows that she's vulnerable and emphasizes the fact she's a teenager and that this film is going to be about her and her problems as a teenager.

  • Story and how the opening sets it up: Georgia is walking to a party with her dad in the car next to her, they have a conversation which informs the audience about whats happening and why she's dressed like that, it also gives some information about the characters.

  • Genre of the film and how it suggests it: The film is a Romantic Comedy this is suggested by the fact that the main character embarrassed herself at the party straight away it indicates that the film is going to be funny. Also the fact that when she talks to her friends they say; 'boy's don't like girls for funniness' this shows that the girls are looking for a boyfriend.
